Please take a look at this auction and tell me what I'm missing.

no clue, makes no sense unless they misunderstood and thought they were bidding on the entire 20th aniv set. why would anyone pay $260.09 plus shipping for a 2006-W BU SAE?

On the contrary, PCGS is known to be "better", ie more expensive. Also, the max PCGS grade for that coin is MS-69, while NGC will grade up to MS-70. I bought a PCGS MS-69 for less than $100, so I have no clue why people are paying that much for NGC MS-69 coins.

Turner - First, yes, you are right about PCGS having a better reputation for grading - and for good reasons beyond the one you gave for grading that one coin at MS 69......the fiasco with the gold 2006 Buffalo really shot NGC in the foot - with them grading almost 20% more at MS 70 than PCGS just go get them on TV coins shows. And I have said in the past that the dealers I know, personally as friends, as well as the other professionals, prefer PCGS and find them more credible. In fact, I have a few NGC coins I have had cross-graded to PCGS cause you get more for PCGS coins, sometime 25% more.

IN GENERAL - As to why people MIGHT be paying that much for an NGC coin - there could be lots of reasons - starting off with the fact that the average member of the general public does not know a decent from a third-rate grader (hell, what must know about numismatics is pitiful and often way off base). The other possiblity is that they watch those TV shows where they tack on another 25-30% to most of the coins they sell to cover their overhead (they tactfully call this the "retail price") and so when people find something for less, they THINK they are grabbing a bargain. If they knew some of the prices, of the dealers those of us in here work with, they'd be shocked!

The people on Ebay are not, generally speaking, the people who come to GIM - they do not know numismatics, they do not even know the real prices of bullion! What they know - or think they know (and don't know) - is what keeps us ahead of the pack!!

So bless them.......they are our friends!!! One day you'll be selling your gold and silver to people just like them......... :rofl:
